Misinformation in the Immigration Debate

Misinformation in the Immigration Debate   June 22, 2018

The misinformation used to whip the pubic into an emotional frenzy over the reports that families of illegals are being separated at the boarder is astonishing. One such claim is that the feds have no authority to determine immigration policy; it is a state issue. They believe CA can admit people on whatever terms it wishes. This issue surfaced repeatedly during the debate on Trump’s travel ban policy.

Let me clear this up. Art 1, §8, cl 3 of the U.S. Const expressly gives Congress the power to “Establish an uniform Rule on Naturalization.” This power is not exercised co-tremendously with the states. It is exclusive to Congress or there would be no “uniform rule.” Under the (pre-constitution) Articles of Confederation, each state had the authority to admit foreigners on its own terms. This created a condition which the great Joseph Story called “mischievous in its nature.” Story’s Commentaries, §1103. Hence, the power was delegated exclusively to Congress. Why? As Story remarks, “It is of the deepest interest to the whole union to know who are entitled to enjoy the rights of citizens in each state, since they thereby, in effect, become entitled to the rights of citizens in all the states.

If aliens might be admitted indiscriminately to enjoy all the rights of citizens at the will of a single state, the union might itself be endangered by an influx of foreigners, hostile to its institutions, ignorant of its powers, and incapable of a due establishment of its privileges.” It should be noted that of all the discord that existed during the constitutional convention, there is no dissonance on this issue. It is sad to see the profound ignorance in America today.

Suicide Rates Way Up

Suicide Rates Way Up June 14, 2018

The CDC reports that suicide rates in the U.S. jumped 30% from 2000 to 2016. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death in the U.S. for all Americans between the ages of 10 to 34. As of 2013, the CDC reported that suicide was the tenth leading cause of death for all age groups. This is a very disturbing trend. As I write in Salt and Light, there were 41,149 suicides in 2013, which equates to 113/day. More people committed suicide in 2013 than died collectively in all the Mid-East wars from September 11, 2001, through 2016. During that time, the U.S. lost a total of 8,704 military service men and women, including non-combat related deaths. For further comparison, a total of 58,220 U.S. service personnel died in Vietnam during that war. What is happening in our culture that we are killing ourselves faster than any enemy could do? A culture without Christ breeds the emotional senses of being lost, worthless, hopeless, depressed, unwanted, unneeded, incapable, and guilt-ridden. And this brokenness isn’t cured by the potions, pills or incantations offered by the world.

The Boy Scouts Have Lost Their Way

The Boy Scouts Have Lost Their Way   May 28, 2018

One of the traditional hall marks of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) was its work to instill strong moral values in teen-aged boys. This was evidenced in the Scout motto: “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the scout law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” The BSA has slid far from that noble cause. The group declared that it is now “genderless.” It dropped the word “boy” from its name because it now accepts people who “identify” as gay and lesbian, as well as girls, into its ranks. Even worse, the Scouts declared that at its 2019 World Jamboree, it will mandate that condoms be made available to “all participants.” This, of course, includes the primary participants—teen-aged children. What message is the Scouts sending to children when: a) it accepts girls into its organization, and then b) actively provides condoms to all participants at its camping activities? Certainly the Scouts are not living up to its own motto, i.e., doing its duty to God and keeping itself morally straight.

What to Ban Next

What to Ban Next  June 5, 2018

For the first time in recorded history, the murder rate in London exceeded that of NYC. “How is that possible?” you ask. “Guns are banned in London.” Apparently, the culprit is knives. True to Leftist thinking, the solution is to ban knives, which the UK has pushed for some time. The UK prohibits most knife sales to those under 18, bans many knives and swords outright, and prohibits citizens from carrying any knife larger than 3-inches “without good reason.” Since that’s not working, perhaps they should also ban blunt objects, screwdrivers, hammers and fists, as all have been used in murders. The first recorded murder was that of Able, killed by his brother Cain. Interestingly, the Bible doesn’t tell us what weapon Cain used—because it doesn’t matter. Cain’s crime was prompted by his own hatred, jealously and anger. He didn’t need a Glock 9mm. Cain’s crime—and every other crime since—was driven by a depraved heart, not a particular weapon. The further society drifts from biblical truths, the faster society degenerates. Unless we begin teaching God’s rules to our youth earnestly and consistently, we will have to ban large rocks, as that might be what Cain used to kill his brother. See Genesis 4:8.

America is on a Disastrous Collision Course

America is on a Disastrous Collision Course   May 27, 2018

Between the economic realities of Leftist give-away programs and America’s embrace of a culture of death, we are facing potential catastrophic economic consequences. For example, Leftists continue to concoct government benefit programs they purport to fund with higher taxes. But only people pay taxes, and that’s the rub. America is not having babies. In 2017, the number of live births in the U.S. dropped to a 30-year low. “No big deal,” you say? Consider this: in 1940, after Social Security was in operation for about four years, there were 154 people paying into the system for every 1 person drawing benefits. By 1965, after Congress added medical benefits to the mix, there were just 4 people paying in for every person drawing out. As of 2013, the Social Security Trustees Report shows that just 2.8 people are paying in for every person drawing benefits. That is an unsustainable trend. There is no way benefits can be paid as promised if the population is dying. If you want a reason to stop killing unborn babies that does not involve moral or religious grounds, here’s one: we need them to pay Social Security taxes.
